THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL MAY 31ST!
Due to the increasing popularity of the Summer Reading Challenge (and because we want to encourage as many children as possible to love reading), we need volunteers to help with the Summer Reading Challenge in the Swansea Libraries this year!
Why Volunteer?
In volunteering to help with the Summer Reading Challenge, you will gain:
- valuable work experience
- a reference for employment
- the opportunity to make a positive contribution to your communities
- a chance to make new friends and learn new skills
- accreditation via recognised bodies (linking in with local schemes such as Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Youth/Children's University, Youth Achievement Award or Arts Award etc).
- at the end of the Summer Reading Challenge, there will be a presentation and celebration event where you will be given a certificate in recognition of time and effort given.
The Summer Reading Challenge Assistants will:
- Sign children up to the Challenge
- Help children to find and choose books
- Listen to them talking about their books
- Help children to use the Summer Reading Challenge website
- Help with events
- Use activity sheets and other ideas to help children share their reading choices with their peers
- Collect data for evaluation
- Take part in devising and delivering two fun events.
Summer Reading Challenge Reporters will:
- Take photos and video footage (with signed permission)
- Use local web opportunities to promote the Challenge via blogging, photos and news items.
- Go into schools with presentations about the Challenge
- Talk to the press
- Do interviews for radio/TV
- Create displays and promotional materials.
Can you spare some time this summer?
Ideally we are looking for thirty volunteers, aged 14-25, who can volunteer for around 24 hours between July 6th and September 14th, in 4 hour sessions. Some libraries may need help at weekends or in the evenings, so please let us know what time of day you are free to help us. As this volunteering opportunity involves working with children we will need parental permission for all volunteers under the age of 16. There is a parental consent form at the end of the application pack.
Successful applicants will have training arranged for them just before the Challenge starts. You will be notified of when this will take place. We may ask you to undertake a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check.
If you would like to apply to volunteer with us, download and complete the application form below, and return it to: Laura Cornish, Volunteer Co-Coordinator, Swansea Central Library, Civic Centre, Oystermouth Road, Swansea, SA1 3SN by FRIDAY 31ST May 2013.
(The due date on the form says May 22nd. Feel free to ignore that!)
Application Forms
You must be available for two training workshops, to take place on Thursday 6th June 2013 and Thursday 13th June 2013 5.45 – 7.45pm.
